CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) PATHWAYS
CTE pathways are programs of study that involve a multiyear sequence of courses that integrates core academic knowledge with technical and occupational knowledge to provide students with a pathway to post-secondary education and careers.
The main focus of CTE is to prepare students for academic achievement, career exploration, career preparation, and leadership development. The successful transition to post-secondary education and the workplace will be accomplished through the principles of college and career readiness: communication, collaboration, problem-solving, professionalism, job shadowing, internships, and business partnerships.
CTE PATHWAYS AT EASTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL INCLUDE:
Engineering Design
Digital, Visual and Media Arts
Healthcare Administrative Services
Patient Care
Click HERE to see the classes offered in each pathway. The student needs to complete the introductory course and capstone class in sequence in order to be a pathway completer. The student’s counselor can help answer any questions regarding the pathways and courses needed.
Additional information regarding CTE, including articulation with SWC can be found on the district website HERE.
EHS MEDICAL PATHWAY offers its own Medical Pathway where students are given extra preparation for a career in the Allied Health industry. Students please visit Mr. Colarusso in room 801 if you have any additional questions.
PATHWAY GOALS:
Ensure students meet A-G requirements for the California University systems
Alter core science classes to give them a medical focus
Give students opportunities for career education through our ROP/CTE classes
Expose students to a variety of careers in the medical field
Provide opportunities for internships, job shadows and hospital visits
Project Lead The Way (PLTW)
Project Lead The Way is the nation’s leading provider of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs. Through world-class K-12 curriculum, high-quality teacher professional development, and outstanding partnerships, PLTW is helping students develop the skills needed to succeed in the global economy.
PLTW Engineering
PLTW Engineering is more than just another high school engineering program. It is about applying engineering, science, math, and technology to solve complex, open-ended problems in a real-world context. Students focus on the process of defining and solving a problem, not on getting the “right” answer. They learn how to apply STEM knowledge, skills, and habits of mind to make the world a better place through innovation.
PLTW students have said that PLTW Engineering influenced their post-secondary decisions and helped shape their future. Even for students who do not plan to pursue engineering after high school, the PLTW Engineering program provides opportunities to develop highly transferable skills in collaboration, communication, and critical thinking, which are relevant for any coursework or career.
Engineering Courses at EHS
Introduction to Design (ID, 1 year) – PLTW – “F” credit
Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects as they build their knowledge and develop skills used by practicing engineers and designers. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work.
Aerospace Engineering Honors (AE-H, 1 year) – PLTW – “G” credit
This course propels students’ learning in the fundamentals of atmospheric and space flight. Students explore concepts such as the physics of flight, stability, navigation, propulsion systems, structures, and aviation physiology as they bring the concepts to life by designing and building airfoils, gliders, and rockets. They learn basic orbital mechanics using industry-standard software. They also explore robot systems through projects such as Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) operations.
Digital Electronics Honors (DE-H, 1 year) – PLTW – “G” credit
From smart phones to appliances, digital circuits are all around us. This course provides a foundation for students who are interested in electrical engineering, electronics, computer engineering, or circuit design. Students study topics such as combinational and sequential logic and are exposed to circuit design tools used in industry, including circuit design software, logic gates, integrated circuits, and programmable logic devices.
Introduction to Robotics (1 year)
In this course, students actively learn basic to advanced robotic principles and more to prepare for participation on our school’s robotics team, TitanBot. Students will have the opportunity to get involved in one or more departments in TitanBot and learn a variety of skills including tools, industrial safety, mechanical design, robot systems, manufacturing techniques, robot programming and control, photography, video editing, finance, writing, leadership and management, communications, etc. Training completed in the Fall semester is then put to work in the Spring as students participate in the design and development of the team’s new robot and team preparation for regional and national FIRST Robotics Competition events in March and April.
Industry Partners
The following companies and organizations are recognized as Community and Industry Partners or Sponsors of the Eastlake High robotics team, TitanBot.
Eastlake Educational Foundation Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR)
Qualcomm Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC)
Booz Allen Hamilton Southcoast Welding and Manufacturing
Nordson Asymtek SDG&E
Scott Trial Lawyers San Diego Plastics
DoDSTEM The Eastlake Self Storage
Engineering Pathway Completion
Students who complete the following courses with a grade of “C” or better during their high school career are recognized as Engineering Pathway Completers and are awarded a custom sash to be worn at graduation. To be eligible, students must take the engineering courses in sequence.
First, take the Engineering Foundations course, Introduction to Design.
Then, take one or more of the following Engineering Concentration courses;
Aerospace Engineering Honors and/or Digital Electronics Honors
